Living Open Source University is an initiative from the Living Open Source Foundation. It offers a free one-year program to 12 students, allowing these students to acquire different open-source certificates. This document describes requirements and provides program details.

Program details

LOSU offers a one year program. During the program students are expected to work at the LOSU venue in Lusaka Zambia. Working together as a group is important, so students are expected to be present in class every day.

LOSU will provide a detailed study program, and students will use the course materials provided to acquire the knowledge. Much of this will be done through self-study, where students will be able to address their mentor on a regular basis.

During the program, students will work on the following topics, and have the opportunity to get certified in many topics. Topics will be covered in the following order.

  • Linux Foundation Certified Associate (LFCA)
  • Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS)
  • Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA)
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

student requirements

Students will need to apply for this program, as there is only place for 12 students in a year. We are looking for the following:

Students have an open source attitude. The essence is to pass it through. After completing the program, students are expected to mentor local groups to make sure that more people are getting certified.

Students must be able to communicate in either English or French. As most course materials are in English, students must have sufficient knowledge of the English language to complete the study successfully.

Students must have affinity with IT. In their application, students should show testimony of this affinity.

Students must be committed and motivated to complete the program. In the interviews that will be held with candidate students, the students will have to explain how they are going to make sure that during the one year program they will be fully dedicated.

After successful completion of the program, students will be committed to the Living Open Source program for at least two more years. During this period, students promise to be available for mentoring of future students. There will be no financial compensation for this mentoring.

sudent benefits

Students will receive course materials and certification vouchers for free. The value of materials used in this course is $3,000.

Students will be introduced to companies that are a sponsor. Sponsoring companies may “adopt” a student, and commit to offering a job interview to participating students at the end of the project, which will highly increase students chance of getting a job at the end of the project.

Students may qualify for financial assistance during the study. Financial support will only be granted in cases where it is necessary, to be determined by the LOSU organization.
